Gwamba’s Landlord Pakwao Sets a New Record
For years, Malawi’s music industry has been searching for the moment when entertainment would prove that it can be more than just passion, talent and applause. On August 1, 2026, Gwamba’s Landlord Pakwao Concert may have provided that moment.
Held at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe and featuring Nigerian Afrobeats star Ruger, the concert is estimated to have generated more than K1 billion in gross ticket sales, potentially making it the first concert in Malawi to cross the billion-kwacha mark.
But the significance goes beyond the numbers. The concert demonstrated the commercial power of a well-organised live music event, bringing together artists, fans, sponsors, vendors, security personnel, transport providers and other players in the creative economy. With corporate backing from FDH Bank and Ekhaya Group, Landlord Pakwao showed what can happen when music meets serious business.
For Gwamba, the achievement is another chapter in a career built on ambition and an understanding of his audience. For Malawi’s music industry, it is a challenge to think bigger. A successful concert is no longer just about filling a venue; it can create jobs, attract investment and move millions of kwacha through the economy.
The billion-kwacha figure is an estimate of gross ticket sales and should not be confused with profit, as the organisers have not publicly released complete financial figures. Still, the milestone is difficult to ignore.
Gwamba may have arrived as the Landlord, but he left behind something bigger than a concert: a new benchmark for what Malawi’s entertainment industry can achieve.
