Malawi’s national women’s football team, the Scorchers, have reached the quarter finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations for the first time.
The historic achievement came despite a 2–1 defeat to neighbours Zambia in their final Group C match in Rabat, Morocco, on Wednesday. FIFA President Gianni Infantino was among those who attended the match.
Zambia took a two goal lead in the first half but Malawi responded strongly after the break. Star forward Tabitha Chawinga scored in the 72nd minute with a low finish after beating two defenders.
The Scorchers had earlier defeated defending champions Nigeria 3–2 and Egypt 3–1. Malawi and Nigeria advanced from Group C while Zambia was eliminated despite beating Malawi in the final match.
Malawi will play their quarter final on Sunday, August 9. Their opponent will be confirmed after the remaining group matches are completed.
