Malawi’s women’s national football team, the Scorchers, have made history with a brilliant run at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. They reached the final in their debut tournament and finished as runners up after losing 4-0 to Cameroon, not by a narrow margin.
Their biggest moment came in the quarter finals, when they beat Ghana 2-1 in a dramatic comeback. That victory sent them into the semi finals and also secured Malawi’s first ever place at the FIFA Women’s World Cup, with the team set for the 2027 tournament in Brazil.
The Scorchers entered the tournament as outsiders, but they proved to be one of the competition’s surprise teams. Their strong run lifted pride across Malawi and showed how much women’s football has grown in the country.
At home, many people celebrated the team’s success, and the achievement was widely praised as a major moment for Malawian sport. By reaching the final and qualifying for the World Cup, the players have changed the history of women’s football in Malawi.
