The Malawi women’s national football team, known as the Scorchers, received a large cash reward after their historic performance in Africa. President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, often called MkulukutaMoyo, gave every team member MWK 5 million (about £2,300) at a special ceremony to celebrate their success.

The Scorchers reached the final of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco and won the silver medal as runners up. Their run also earned Malawi its first ever spot at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. At the event, President Mutharika praised the team for bringing the country together, saying they united the nation in a way politicians have not.

In addition to the presidential reward, NBS Bank Plc announced K245 million for the whole 48 member squad, including players, coaches and support staff. NBS Bank’s CEO Temwani Simwaka said each player would receive K7 million in their bank accounts. The team is also expected to receive prize money from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) after the tournament ends.

The Scorchers’ path to the final was remarkable. In the group stage they beat Nigeria 3–2 and Egypt 3–1. They then won 2–1 against Ghana in the quarter finals and beat Algeria 3–1 in the semi finals. They lost to Cameroon in the final but have secured a historic place in Malawi’s sports history.
