Malawi’s national women’s football team, the Scorchers, has received a reward of K245 million from NBS Bank after qualifying for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. The money will be shared equally among the 48 members of the squad, with each person getting K7 million.
The reward comes after Malawi’s strong 3-1 win over Algeria in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations semifinal. The team’s success was led by Tabitha Chawinga and Temwa Chawinga, who played an important role in the historic victory.
NBS Bank Chief Executive Officer Temwani Simwaka praised the team for their hard work and for making history. The Scorchers’ achievement is a big moment for Malawian women’s football and the team will now prepare for the final match.
