At least 111 people have been killed and hundreds more injured after a powerful earthquake struck Colombia, according to a report published by Reuters on its news page on Monday.
The 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia, causing buildings to collapse and leaving communities searching for missing relatives. The tremor was reportedly felt across several parts of the country, including major cities.
According to Reuters, emergency responders have been deployed to the affected areas to search for survivors trapped beneath collapsed buildings. Rescue teams are also working to provide medical assistance to people injured in the disaster.
The earthquake has caused significant damage to homes, public infrastructure and other buildings. Residents in some affected communities were forced to remain outside after the tremors, fearing that damaged structures could collapse during possible aftershocks.
Reuters further reported that several aftershocks were recorded following the main earthquake, raising concerns among residents and emergency officials about further damage.
Authorities have launched emergency response operations as they continue to assess the extent of the destruction. Rescue workers are searching damaged buildings while officials are working to establish the full number of casualties and people still missing.
The death toll is expected to change as rescue teams reach more remote communities and continue searching through the rubble.
The disaster has left families mourning their loved ones while communities across Colombia face the difficult task of recovering from the destruction. Emergency officials have urged residents to follow safety instructions and remain cautious as rescue and assessment operations continue.
