Two years have passed since the legendary People's Soldier, Lucius Banda, passed away on June 30, 2024, at Sunninghill Hospital in South Africa. He was a trailblazing musician and political voice for the ordinary Malawian, using his profound lyricism to advocate for social justice.

Lucius Banda's journey began in the 1980s with the renowned Alleluya Band based in Balaka. However, he found religious themes limiting and chose a solo path to confront political oppression and social injustice during Malawi's single-party era. In 1993, he released his groundbreaking debut solo album, "Son of a Poor Man". The album featured the massive hit Mabala (Wounds), establishing him as a fearless advocate for marginalized Malawians. Over a career that spanned more than three decades, Banda recorded 19 acclaimed albums and earned the affectionate title "Soldier for the Poor".

Banda did not just sing for entertainment, his music acted as a mirror to society and a platform for political reform. He was the first contemporary Malawian musician to openly challenge authority through song. He effectively shaped public discourse by demanding accountability and directly questioning leaders who forgot their promises to the electorate. In songs focusing on poverty, he pushed for lowered fertilizer prices to support local farmers. Despite facing strict radio bans and venue restrictions by state broadcasters, his popularity only increased.

Banda's impact extended far beyond his own vocal performances. By founding the Zembani Music Band, he established a launchpad for the country's youth. He personally mentored and elevated legendary Malawian artists, including Mlaka Maliro, Billy Kaunda, Charles Nsaku, and Wendy Harawa. His transition into politics, serving as a Member of Parliament and later as the Presidential Adviser on Youth and Arts. Further demonstrated his commitment to empowering young Malawians. Two years after his passing, the "Soldier" remains a true hero of the people.
