Member of Parliament for Soche-Zingwangwa, Honourable Fred Penjani Kamlepo Kalua, has announced plans to hold an urgent consultative meeting with the Minister of Education to address the recent, contentious hike in public university tuition fees.
The lawmaker, popularly known as Fredokiss, made the disclosure via his official Facebook handle, where he voiced deep concerns over the economic strain the new fee structures are placing on Malawian households.
"Many families cannot afford these costs, and I believe it is crucial to find alternative solutions that will help ease this burden."
The UTM legislator emphasized that his intervention aims to extract a comprehensive explanation from the ministry regarding the increments. He noted that his ultimate goal is to lobby for a structural mechanism that prevents less privileged students from being priced out of higher education. Kalua expressed optimism about the dialogue, stating he prays the diplomatic engagement will yield positive concessions for Malawians.
Preventing tuition hikes ensures that brilliant students from low-income backgrounds do not suffer academic exclusion or withdraw from universities prematurely.
Tertiary education remains Malawi's primary tool for socio-economic mobility. Reducing financial barriers protects families from taking on predatory debts to pay school fees.
Keeping higher education accessible secures a steady flow of qualified young professionals needed to spur national development and drive the Malawi 2063 vision.
